What’s Happening Benbrook?
The economy continues to struggle to reach levels experienced in 2008 and earlier, but Benbrook has many exciting issues on the horizon that are expected to improve conditions for those who have invested in Benbrook in either commercial, industrial or private residence. City elections are finally over and we can begin to focus on larger issues.
Walmart engineers have submitted civil design plans to the City of Benbrook. Planning and Community Development staff is currently reviewing the sketch plat to insure all issues are in compliance with the City of Benbrook’s design and construction guidelines. The Final Plat is expected to be considered at the July 9th Planning & Zoning Commission meeting. Any recommendation coming from P&Z members will be heard at a future meeting of the Benbrook City Council.
Delays in Walmart projects in other parts of the country have created an opportunity for earlier construction of the planned 2011 Benbrook SuperCenter.
City of Benbrook’s Planning Department is also working with the Texas Department of Transportation to inform business owners and managers of changes being planned for the improvement of Benbrook Blvd. (US377) from I-820 to Winscott Road/Lakeside. Construction had previously been expected in early 2012, but appears it could now occur sooner. Watch for the public meeting notices on this issue.
BBT Crossing, Ltd., the development/real estate partner who has been working with the Benbrook Economic Development Corporation for the past five years, has submitted its notice of intent to exercise its Purchase Option on all remaining unsold Benbrook Towne Crossing land currently deeded to the Benbrook EDC from Sproles north to I-820 and on the west side of Benbrook Blvd. (US377). The development company has until August 20, 2009, to finalize its purchase plans and repay the BEDC for all funds expended on the approximately 80-acre project.
A search remains underway as the City of Benbrook’s Visitor Center, Benbrook Economic Development Corporation and Benbrook Area Chamber of Commerce consider moving operations into a shared office area. No final decisions have been made, but all entities have expressed an interest in sharing space. The Visitor’s Center has discussed incorporating a museum quality display area to showcase early Benbrook life.
