The Way Home Program

Sometimes the simplest ideals are over looked. The Way Home Program is one of those ideals. This program was designed to help police return lost loved ones home.

When you think of Benbrook, you think of a small city that is a good place to raise your family. The Way Home Program is just another good reason to bring your family to Benbrook. Its main design is to help people who have Alzheimer’s, Autism or any other condition that makes it difficult to communicate.

Family members are allowed to enter an individual’s information into a database that will assist police officers when dealing with lost or confused persons. Entering the loved one’s information is simple. If you have guardianship or power of attorney of a loved one you can register that person. Simply complete a registration form at the police department or police sponsored event. That information will be forwarded to an official with The Way Home Program. That official will make contact with you, complete the registration process and arrange a time to come take a photograph of the loved one.

The Way Home Program is only used by the police for finding or returning the lost loved one. For example, a police officer on patrol comes across a person who appears lost. That person has a mental condition that prevents them from knowing who they are or where they live. The officer will now have a database to turn to. Using the database the officer can identify the person and get them home in minutes versus hours.

Come join the Benbrook Police Department in kicking off The Way Home Program. The official kick off is October 7, 2008 at National Night Out located at the YMCA in south Benbrook. Any questions can be directed to Officer Wes Cooper at the Benbrook Police Department.
