A summary of our available services

Neighborhood Watch - Our most effective crime-fighting resource

The Crime Prevention Officer helps neighborhoods organize and conduct Neighborhood Watch Groups. We tell the group what to report to the emergency telephone number and what to report to the non-emergency number. We will also explain what happens when they call 911. We discuss and recommend proven crime-prevention techniques and we share crime prevention tips.

We assist the Neighborhood Watch Groups in keeping the groups active and speak to or arrange to get speakers on subjects that are of interest to the groups at regular or special meetings. We provide statistics to the Neighborhood Watch Groups at the beginning of each month letting the groups know what kinds of crimes are occurring in their neighborhoods and inform them of how to combat the crime.

Operation Child ID - Protecting our most precious resource

This is a program designed to safeguard children by having them fingerprinted. We have acquired kits that you can use to fingerprint your child at home and then you keep the prints there just in case anything happens to your child. These kits have everything you need to fingerprint your child including a place for a description of the child, the ink, and instructions. These kits also have safety tips that you can use to talk to your children about strangers.

Operation Identification Mark your territory!

With this program you mark your valuables in your house, such as televisions, VCRs, radios, and computers, with your Texas Driver License number. This does not keep your home from being burglarized, but it will make it easier for us to return the property to you if it is located. We recommend that you use an engraving tool to do this. We have engravers available for you to use free of charge.

Residential and Business Security Surveys

The Crime Prevention Officer is licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance to inspect and assess your residence or commercial operation. We will come to your home or business and walk through and perform a thorough survey, telling you ways that you can reduce the chances of becoming a victim of a burglary. We assess doors, windows, lighting, and landscaping. Often we can suggest inexpensive ways to improve security, and most homeowner's policies offer discounts to homeowners who take advantage of this service.

Please read our Security Survey Checklistbefore requesting a survey.

Bicycle Registration

All Benbrook residents may register their bicycles with the Benbrook Police Department. Registrants receive a registration sticker and have their Texas drivers license number engraved on their bicycles. Registration helps deter theft and aids in the recovery of stolen bicycles.

Child Gun Locks

The Crime Prevention Office provides Benbrook residents with free gun safety locks (limit 3). These are available from the Crime Prevention Officer Mon. through Fri. from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. See the police dispatcher for gun locks after hours.

Project LEAP

Project L.E.A.P. is a program designed to provide Benbrook’s elderly and disabled citizens additional options in emergency situations. It involves distributing donated cell phones to these individuals to provide immediate 9-1-1 access to police, EMS, and fire personnel.

Cellular phones are donated to the Benbrook Police Department by citizens and businesses for use in the program. The phones are then provided to help expedite emergency 9-1-1 contact for individuals that would not otherwise have access to a cellular phone.

The department is accepting cellular phones for Project L.E.A.P. at this time.
