Dangerous Dogs

A dangerous dog:

  • makes an unprovoked attack on a person that causes bodily injury and occurs in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept and that was reasonably certain to prevent the dog from leaving the enclosure on its own, or
  • commits unprovoked attacks in a place other than an enclosure in which the dog was being kept and that was reasonably certain to prevent the dog from leaving the enclosure on its own and those acts cause a person to reasonably believe that the dog will attack and cause bodily injury to that person.

The owner of a dangerous dog must:

  • register the dangerous dog with Animal Control, showing proof of current rabies vaccination, the secure enclosure in which the dog will be kept, and liability insurance coverage of at least $100,000 to cover damages resulting from an attack by the dog causing bodily injury to a person;
  • pay an annual registration fee of $50;
  • place the registration tag provided by Animal Control on the dog’s collar;
  • restrain the dog at all times on a leash or in a secure enclosure;
  • notify Animal Control if the dog is sold or moved to a new address in Benbrook no later than 14 days after the sale or move; and
  • notify Animal Control of any attacks of people by the dangerous dog.
