  • Civil Service

The Benbrook Police Department operates under Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code (Municipal Civil Service). All entry-level qualifications are established by law and by act of the Benbrook Civil Service Commission.

  • Probation Period

All civil service personnel certified prior to employment are subject to a one-year probation period. Entry level police officers must complete an 18 month probationary period before being eligible to classify as civil service employees.

  • Vacation

After completing each full year of service, civil service employees are entitled to fifteen days paid vacation.

        ยท         Sick Leave

Employees earn fifteen days of sick leave per year. Unused sick leave accumulates without restriction for civil service personnel. Non-civil service employees may accumulate up to 480 hours of sick leave.

  • Holidays

The City observes ten holidays, plus a floating holiday.

  • Retirement

The City of Benbrook is a member of the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS). As a member of TMRS, a 7% contribution is withheld by the City and deposited in the employee's account. The City matches employee deposits at the rate of 2:1 upon retirement. Retirement benefits are available after 20 years of service.

The City also offers employees a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.

  • Group Insurance

Full-time employees receive group hospitalization, dental and life insurance coverage. Each employee may elect to insure his or her eligible dependents by paying the cost of their coverage. Additional life insurance and a disability policy are available at employee cost.

  • Uniforms

Uniforms and equipment, including body armor and weapons, are provided.

  • Certificate Pay

Eligible full-time police officers possessing a TCLEOSE Intermediate Certificate receive an additional $75.00 per month above base pay. Officers with Advanced Certification receive an additional $150.00 per month. To be eligible for Certificate Pay, an officer must maintain current CPR and First Aid certification and a satisfactory performance rating.
